Cytomel
Generic Name: Liothyronine
Tablets (lye-oh-THYE-roh-neen)
Brand Name: Cytomel
Liothyronine, (Brand Name:
Cytomel) a thyroid
hormone, is
used to treat hypothyroidism, a state where the thyroid
gland does not create enough thyroid hormone for normal
health. This medication may be prescribed for other
conditions as well; ask your doctor or pharmacist for
more information. Without this hormone, the body cannot
function correctly, resulting in poor slow growth, slow
speech, lack of energy, weight gain, hair loss, dry thick
skin, and amplified sensitivity to cold. When taken
correctly, liothyronine reverses these symptoms.
Liothyronine is also used to treat goiter (enlarged
thyroid gland) and to test for hyperthyroidism (a
condition where the thyroid gland produces too much
thyroid hormone).
Cytomel
(Manufactured by: Jones Pharma) is not an
anabolic/androgenic steroid but a thyroid hormone. As a
substance it contains synthetically manufactured
liothyronine sodium which resembles the natural thyroid
hormone tricodide-thyronine (L-T3). The thyroid of a
healthy person generally produces two hormones, the
better known L-thyroxine (L-T4) and the aforementioned
L-trilodine~thyronine (L-T3). Since Cytomel is the
synthetic equivalent of the latter hormone, it causes the
same processes in the body as if the thyroid were to
create more of the hormone.
Cytomel is a thyroid hormone. It works by
replacing or supplementing the natural thyroid hormones
in the body. Cytomel, used alone or with other medicines,
should not be used to treat obesity or for common weight
loss. Large doses may produce serious or life-threatening
situations, particularly when used with other medicines
that reduce, suppress the
appetite.
It is not recommended that your daily cytomel
dose be taken all at once, but broken down into three
smaller individual doses so that they become more
effective.
